Divide the room into several sections
If you have several things to do in the family room, you better make it into several sections. Maybe you will find that the space is not enough to divide it into several sections. To overcome this problem, you can buy some furniture which has multiple purposes. You can buy a sofa that fold out into a bed for your guests or buy benches which have storage inside to keep toys or other things well organized and as a place to sit. Consider the traffic line
You may also considering about the traffic line in your family room. Your multi-functional room should not make the family members uncomfortable in order to moving into other section. There should be a clear lane around the room.
The division of light
It will be better if you use various lights for multi-functional room. It is because some activities need bright light while others not. You may consider by looking of the function for each room.
